2021 Mar;121(3):467-492. doi: 10.1016/j.jand.2020.10.017. 2018-12-05 ARFID, or avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder, is an eating or feeding disturbance. Prior to 2013, it might have been called "selective eating disorder." A person with ARFID is not just a picky eater. I’m not sure if I actually got an ARFID diagnosis because often the diagnosis I get (other than autism) are basically one day a doctor is like “ok here’s your new med for X diagnosis” and then I realized that I got a diagnosis, and since my therapist would ask about if I ate something new, if I still have my safe foods, etc, I think it’s safe to say that I got a diagnosis for ARFID Background: Not much is known at present about the behavioural and sensory profiles of children with avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), the newest addition to the eating disorder diagnostic category in DSM-V. Our aims were to examine eating difficulties, behavioural problems and sensory hypersensitivity in ARFID children, relative to typically developing children with no Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) and autism.
ARFID is a pattern of eating that is common in individuals with autism and is combined with sensory sensitivity. Researchers have found links between autism and eating disorders, especially in thinking profiles. Both disorder patterns overlap with eating and restriction of food intake and potential for significant weight loss.
Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is a relatively new term, that was introduced in 2013 when it first appeared in the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013). It has also previously been known as Selective Eating Disorder. Our aims were to examine eating difficulties, behavioural problems and sensory hypersensitivity in ARFID children, relative to typically developing children with no reported feeding, mental or physical health problems, as well as children with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD; typically associated with a high prevalence of eating problems) or Picky Eating (PE). ARFID individuals have high sensory detection and are often misdiagnosed as being on the autism spectrum or having attention deficit disorder. Anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorders are treated with a multitude of recovery modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), nutritional support, and process groups. ARFID can be present on its own, or it can co-occur with other conditions; those most commonly co-occurring with ARFID are anxiety disorders, autism, ADHD and a range of medical conditions.
